The twasseccs hate the ure vehemently, and vice versa. An average twassecc will attempt to kill a ure on sight, without so much as an attempt at communication. An average ure will of course do exactly the same. It is, however, interesting to note that the twasseccs and the ure originate from the same planet, Twassure. In fact, they were at one time allies. Why the change?
Development
The twasseccs and the ure developed separately, and had always competed for resources. After several squabbles and minor wars, the two races reached a peace agreement that lasted for thousands of years. The twasseccs and the ure combined their separate strengths and each became more powerful because of it. While they never integrated their two societies into one, the two races intermingled and even lived in the same cities. The two races were even beginning to pass laws regarding discrimination on the basis of species when they were first approached by the kittek.
Politics
The kittek came to the twasseccs and the ure near the end of the Great War in a request for aid. The current twassecc government was headed by Lokara Varen. She was initially very indecisive as to what to do about the kittek, but eventually declined to aid them, swearing neutrality in the Great War. Her decision was based in part on the instincts of the ure king, Tervum; she trusted him as a friend and ally, and when he warned her that because of psychic clues he felt that the kittek were not to be trusted, she believed him. Thus, both the twasseccs and the ure declined to help the kittek. However, one twassecc political group, the Twassure Liberation Front (TLF), openly criticized Lokara’s decision.
The TLF was opposed to the twassecc-ure alliance, and believed that twasseccs were superior. They feared and distrusted the ure, with their psychic capabilities, and insisted that no good could come from consorting with them. Some TLF extremists even pushed for the systematic extermination of all ure. They believed that if the ure had declined the help the kittek, the twasseccs should do so with all of their strength.
Two Discoveries
As the twasseccs were dealing with the kittek, a twassecc scientist named Eltri Kaft heard that a spacecraft had crashed on Twassure, in a remote desert. He assembled a team of excavators and went to the site, unwittingly stumbling upon a nearly undamaged kittek transport ship. The kittek on board were all dead, but the ship itself seemed almost completely intact. Eltri immediately had the ship brought back to his laboratory.
What he found was incredible; vast amounts of kitteki technology could be found on this one ship. After a brief episode of public fame, Eltri got to work reverse engineering the ship. It would take him many years.
A few years after Eltri Kaft’s discovery, ure astrologers called Lokara with terrible news. They had discovered that a tremendous asteroid was hurtling toward Twassure and would impact within the next twenty-five years. The rock was so vast that nothing was expected to survive. Lokara immediately took steps to coordinate an effort to attempt to divert the asteroid.
Power Shift
With the news of the asteroid, the TLF launched a propaganda campaign. They insisted that the ure’s mysterious ability to manipulate objects at a distance pointed the finger of blame at them. The TLF convinced thousands that the ure had deliberately sent the asteroid in order to destroy the twasseccs. Most found this idea preposterous, but the idea had been planted.
To their credit, the ure did everything they could to divert the asteroid. They constructed a psychic amplifier of monumental proportions; they hoped to use it to move the rock off course. Most twasseccs assumed that the ure would take care of the problem, and got back to their daily lives.
The TLF, however, did not wish to take such a passive role. They financed Eltri Kaft’s research, hoping to find some bit of kitteki technology they might use to destroy the asteroid themselves. As such, they had financial control over almost all the new devices Eltri and his crew were able to design as a result of the kittek ship. The TLF began to grow extremely wealthy.
With approximately ten years to go, the ure once again called Lokara with distressing news. Their psychic amplifier had been destroyed by terrorist activity and they would be unable to complete a new one in time. They urged evacuation. Ashamed of her failure to act, Lokara resigned from office.
With the need to elect new leadership, the TLF entered a candidate, Doxel Sakarr. They gained incredible support; their propaganda blamed the ure for failing to stop the asteroid and insinuated that they had done it on purpose. Violent anti-ure protests were staged. Using their newfound wealth, the TLF convinced everyone that Doxel would be the best choice for a new leader. He was elected.
Terror
Doxel’s first act as twassecc leader was to commission the building of an evacuation fleet, for he knew there would be insufficient time to stop the asteroid. At the same time, he began to recruit an army. While most of the twassecc population was opposed to actively attacking the ure, Doxel quickly proved that dissenters would not be tolerated. He had Lokara executed for her refusal to help the kittek and he had Eltri Kaft assassinated so that he could possess the kittek ship for his own purposes. The public was outraged, but by this point they were living in terror of Doxel’s iron fist.
The TLF began to kill ure openly. The ure fled from the twassecc cities and walled themselves up in their own holdings. They began constructing their own evacuation fleet. Doxel ordered it destroyed. He also commanded that in addition to the twassecc fleet, a massive weapon, a veritable battlecruiser, was to be created to guard it.
Evacuation
With only months left before impact, the twassecc fleet was finally ready. Doxel and his armies herded the twassecc people onto the craft and began launching. As they began leaving Twassure in massive numbers, the ure followed suit. They assumed (rightly) that Doxel would attempt to prevent them from launching if he got into space first.
Betrayal
Doxel indeed attempted to stop the ure from lifting off. He had outwitted them, however; the ure had assumed that if they launched at the same time as the twasseccs they would be safe. Unbeknownst to them, however, the battlecruiser Doxel had constructed, the Alepso, was already in orbit. A tremendous war machine bristling with kittek technology, it had been capable of cloaking itself from ure instruments. As the ure began to flee, the Alepso opened fire, destroying over half of their evacuation fleet. Millions of ure were killed; the survivors were forced to flee in all directions.
After
The twasseccs quickly rushed to take control of the nearby systems even as Twassure was destroyed. The Benid system, commonly known as the Triad, was their greatest and most strategic conquest. This system was full of resources, and they quickly fortified it, ensuring they would have adequate supplies for the years ahead.
Meanwhile, the ure fled; they happened upon the flisp system, a good supply of resources in its own right. They quickly took control of it and (though regrettably) enslaved the natives. Eventually the flispians gained some of their freedom back, but they are still essentially at the mercy of the ure.
Both factions began to develop new weaponry, each in fear of the other, and started to spread their net of control outwards, in search of allies…
