When a Choeroed is found guilty of a crime, he is punished. (see Choeroed Consequences) However, they must be found guilty first, and they are given every chance to defend themselves.
The crime is first assessed, and various members of the public are called at random to assess the seriousness of the crime. They then decide what punishment the 'villan' is going to recieve, when he/she is caught. Obviously, if it is a weak or common crime, such as shoplifting, the public is not bothered.
Then the Choeroed law enforcement department goes into action. They comb the area, ask questions, check individual molecules, and in general gather all the evidence possible. With their technology, that is a lot of evidence. Very few criminals go uncaught. After they determine the identity of the criminal, they hunt him/her down and bring them in. If they have comitted an extreme crime, such as driving a BER-walker through downtown Chethalta, the military is sent in to disable their firepower. If they are armed, Choeroeds are authorized to shoot them with a potent neurotoxin. While this would kill a twassecc and even a Hurk in time, it merely puts them into a coma that will only reverse when they are detoxified.
When the criminal is in custody, they take him around and ask ten civilians at random off the street how long their sentence should be (Unless was determined before hand that they get Death or Life Sentencing). They are given a range (On a scale of 1-10, how many years...) to choose from. After the length is decided, the criminal is given a chance to speak. If he has a reasonable story, then he is held in custody while it is checked out. If in fact he is innocent, he is released and compensated for his trouble. If he is not innocent, but he lied and said he was, one year is added to the sentence , unless it is at the max. If it is at the max, it is upgraded to death. If he already has death, he loses the option to choose how he is executed. If it was already the maximum, a life sentence, his scritos supply is cut off so he has to suffer even more. If it was a very minor crime that would usually only require a small, few day sentence... well that sucks for the criminal. He still gets an extra year.
