Obviously, where there is society, there are the unruly members of said society. The Choeroeds have a legal system just like many other races, and they have laws and punishments to corrospond to specific crimes. There are really only a few different punishments, but the crimes that place them there vary.
PUNISHMENT #1: The Brig
Any Choeroed who commits a small to semi-serious crime is dragged, in chains, to the Brig, a kind of prison that can be either on land or in the base of a Leviathan. They are forced to remain there for an indefinite period of time, anywhere from one day to a week. This is more of a 'time out' than anything else.
Crimes that earn this punishment: Petty theft, disrespecting an officer, minor assault.
PUNISHMENT #2: The Deep Brig
Any Choeroed who commits a semi-serious to very dangerous crime is sent to the Deep Brig. These are special spheres that are chained to the bottom of the ocean. They have systems that automatically extract oxygen and plankton from the water and synthesize them into useable materials. The convicted Choeroed can thus stay down there indefinitely, unattended. It is in very deep water and pressurized from within, so if the Choeroed were to escape the Deep Brig somehow, the sudden pressure change would crush his lungs and kill him. This punishment lasts anywhere from a series to ten years.
Crimes that earn the Deep Brig: Major assault, major theft, arson, deliberate damage to another's property.
PUNISHMENT #3: Death Penalty
Any Choeroed who commits a heinious crime is sentenced to death. The Choeroed may choose his own execution method, and in the past it has been everything from slit throats to 'strapped to a bomb and dropped from a sickle during the next battle'.
Crimes that earn death: Murder
PUNISHMENT #4: Life Sentence
Yes, there is a punishment worse than death for a Choeroed. Those judged disgustingly violent or dangerous to society are sent to the Deep Brig forever. There is no way for them to escape, and they usually end up dying of old age, isolated from the rest of the world. For a Choeroed... that is worse than death.
Crimes that earn a life sentence: Particularly Violent Murder, Torture
