Hurks have an interesting family system. The cheif difference about it is that it is not based upon actual genetic relations. Hurks do not marry, nor do they mate for life. Children are born live, often alone, but occasionally up to 5 are born at once. The Hurklings are small, only 20 or 30 pounds, but can move about and see already. The mother takes care of the young for about a series, then releases them in the village. However, until they are several years old, all Hurks in the village will care for them. Adult Hurks are expected to choose apprentices every few years. The adults will choose a Hurkling they think to have good qualities and bestow upon it teachings of their profession. The young hurk will stay with its master for many years, or until it is a master itself. It is then released, but often strong bonds form between master and apprentice, and lifelong friends are made. The master and apprentice become like father/son, instead of a Hurk's actual biological father.
(Note: Hurk children are named interestingly. Each has three names. The mother chooses one, the child itself chooses one, and its master chooses one when it completes its apprenticeship and takes on its own apprentice. Therefore, you are considered a highly honored member of society until you have all three names. One final, fourth name, which is of huge honor, can be bestowed by the current Hurk General.)
(Note2: For example, Hurker's name is Noros Hurker Thorg Afmon.)
